Review: ASICS GEL-KAYANO 27

Are you looking for a stability running trainer to support your feet during your runs? The new GEL-KAYANO 27 from ASICS might be the model for you! We asked 10 members of the Run Mummy Run community to try these trainers out for themselves and give their feedback on the shoes. They’ve been running in them over the last couple of months, testing them in all conditions, over all distances. Here is our ASICS GEL-KAYANO 27 in-depth review.

WHAT THEY SAY

The ASICS GEL-KAYANO 27 trainers are designed for runners who need stability and support. They have a flexible sole to allow your foot to roll naturally through your gait cycle. The shoe uses DYNAMIC DUOMAX™ technology, which helps support your foot and increases stability for runners who overpronate (feet roll inwards). The midsole uses SPACE TRUSSTIC™ technology to further support your foot, as well as reduce the overall weight of the shoe (244g). The shoe is designed to move naturally with your foot, so they are comfortable to wear as well as supportive.

Other features include a redesigned mesh upper to keep your feet cool, reflective materials on the back of the shoe to help you be visible in low-light conditions, and a 13mm drop.

WHAT WE SAY

10 Run Mummy Run community members were sent a pair of ASICS GEL-KAYANO 27 trainers to test in one of two colourways. There are, however, seven different colour options on the website to choose from. We asked our women to give us their feedback on important features of the trainers such as first impressions, sizing, what they’re like to run in and what they like about them.

First impressions

“I love the sleek black look of the trainers and immediately thought I could wear them in everyday life as well as running – a cardinal sin to some I know! I found the slight overhang of the toe box unusual at first, but I’ve never had ASICS before so they were completely new to me.” Rachel Stanton

“A long time ago, I used to run in KAYANO shoes, but hadn’t tried them since. Opening the box, they immediately feel happily familiar in their design, but they also feel lighter than I remember. I love the look and style of them.” Julie Bassett

Sizing/fit

“I ordered half a size up from my normal size, as I usually would with running shoes. The toe box is slightly tight, as I have found with previous KAYANO models, but nothing that can’t be remedied with loosening the laces somewhat.”  Danielle Dale

“Very comfy. True to size unlike last few models.” Kath Atkinson

“I have wide feet, so I was apprehensive about the fit but the ASICS didn’t let me down. They fit really well. My feet feel supported instead of confined. A good size 8. I always think the sign of a good trainer is how your feet feel when you take them off. I’m seriously impressed with these trainers.” Sophia Spall

“The sizing and fit are perfect! I have quite narrow feet, but the shape of these seem to fit my feet really well. I don’t need to rearrange the laces as I do with other brands to prevent the heels slipping.” Aimee Payne

Road test

“My runs may not be much to others; I usually do about 6km-10km about three times a week. I was worried at first that they might not be supportive enough, as they are really soft and I pronate really badly. However, I did have a slight ache in my right ankle on my first few runs, but whether that was the support or new shoes I’m not sure! Looking at the pictures I can see they’re actually keeping my foot quite straight ,which is a miracle really!” Rachel Stanton

“Absolutely amazing! Straight out the box and 5km done. Didn’t need to break them in – I usually get blisters with new running shoes, but not with these. Felt cushioned with each step and supportive. If I run in anything unsupportive, I get knee pain. Again didn’t happen with these. Absolutely in love with these running shoes. And would recommend to anyone looking for a cushioned and supportive running shoe.” Sarah Wake

“They are light, springy and actually a real joy to run in. Very supportive and I felt extremely sure footed, even though it was wet and slippery underfoot.” Miranda Wood

Final thoughts

“I am and will remain a devoted KAYANO wearer. I’ve strayed to other models over the years, due to their price, but always ultimately come back to them. They are an excellent pair of shoes; really great to run it.” Danielle Dale

“The only negative I have is the colour – I wouldn’t chose a white pair myself. Other than that they’re perfect for me. The best feature is the support. This is most important to me when I am running – I don’t want to damage me knees.” Sarah Wake

“With fibromyalgia I can have quite sensitive feet. These trainers have been the  shoes to end my hunt for the perfect running trainer! The cushioning, support and comfort are amazing. The shoes are so light I can even forget I have them on. Running in these feels like I have support for my overpronation that I’ve never had before. I loved that these didn’t need breaking in, and I’ve happily run several 5km, an 8km and a 10km run in them.” Aimee Payne
